When the Vanderbilts moved in, they discovered that there was no door from the servants' quarters (back) to the kitchen areas. So they built this slate "bridge" so that the staff didn't have to walk all the way around the house to get to work.

The George Vanderbilt crest, oak leaves and acorns are everywhere. You see, money can buy almost anything. The crest, etc., are complete fabrications; these were very middle-class people.

The clock was electrically wired to 20 others in the house, keeping them perfectly synchronized, so the staff would always be on time.
